Celebrating Families!  An Online Auction & Fundraiser

This important online auction was one of our primary sources of fundraising revenue, making its success critical to Council's important work!  "Celebrating Families!" celebrated all of the families we serve.  All of them coming from different backgrounds in the many neighborhoods of Nassau County!  Though an online auction platform, Bidding For Good, participants were able to get in the competitive spirit and bid on valuable auction offerings in June 2016.

We had nearly 40 items featured for bidding, including:

  • VIP Wine Tasting Trip for 6 to Martha Clara Vineyards
  • New York Mets Fan Package
  • Apple iWatch
  • Beautiful Caribbean Vacations
  • Valentino Sunglasses

We would like to thank all who participated and are looking forward to our next spring event in April 2017!

Community Champions for Children Symposium & Luncheon

On Thursday, April 30, 2015, we hosted our Community Champions for Children Symposium & Luncheon at The Carltun in East Meadow, NY. This event was particularly timely, as support for Pre-K programs and early education has become an increasingly prominent topic, both locally and nationally. The Symposium focused specifically on "Building Resiliency in Young Children" and featured a panel of experts who shared strategies to foster the overall social-emotional health of children and their families. The luncheon portion celebrated the commitment of those who have made it a priority for all children to have a healthy start in order to build a strong future.

We were thrilled to welcome nationally recognized researcher Walter S. Gilliam, MSEd, PhD, as the panel facilitator during the morning symposium, as well as the keynote speaker at the luncheon. Dr. Gilliam, who recently presented opening remarks for a working session entitled "Equity and Excellence in the Earliest Years" at the White House Summit on Early Education, spoke on the promotion of social emotional well-being in young children in early care and education settings. He explored mental health consultation in child care from both a local and national perspective. Dr. Gilliam is an Associate Professor of Psychology in the Child Study Center at Yale School of Medicine, and Director of The Edward Zigler Center in Child Development and Social Policy. His focus primarily involves early childhood education and assessment policies, quality improvement methods and prekindergarten implementation. His research was instrumental in the creation of the Early Childhood Consultation Partnership (ECCP), which is currently utilized as part of NASSAU THRIVES, Council's collaborative initiative with Docs for Tots and Adelphi University's Parenting Institute to build resiliency in young children.

We were equally delighted to honor two outstanding individuals who have demonstrated their own personal and professional commitment to providing a healthy start and a strong future for children. Drew Bogner, PhD, President of Molloy College, is well respected in the educational community for his 15 years of transformative leadership at Molloy. He is Vice-Chair of the Long Island Association's Health, Education and Not-For-Profit Committee, which discusses health insurance and accessibility, education opportunities and ways to foster the work of not-for-profit organizations. Dr. Bogner believes a solid foundation in the early years is essential to the educational pursuits of students, leading to successful careers and fulfilling lives as adults. David Fagan, MD, FAAP, Chairman of the Nassau University Medical Center Department of Pediatrics, is widely recognized for his advocacy on behalf of young children in the pediatric community. Dr. Fagan invited Council to partner in NUMC's Healthy Active Living Initiative, a program in which pediatric residents work alongside child care providers to focus on nutrition and obesity prevention. Council acknowledges his longstanding commitment to children, not only during his everyday work as a pediatrician, but in his involvement with Docs for Tots, where he promotes policies and practices to improve the health and development of infants, toddlers and preschoolers in child care settings.

Masquerade- A Phantom Gala

It's Mysterious... It's Fun... It's Easy... The Phantom Gala was a virtual fundraiser to benefit Council's mission to help families access quality child care and early learning that fosters successful growth and development for every child.

The site also featured a fantastic Online Auction, which was open for bids from May 8th through May 18th.

As part of the Phantom Gala "non-event", Child Care Council presented supporters with the opportunity to win four tickets to Disney world, along with a ton of other wonderful prizes, totaling over $1,000 in value. The winner of this year's Personal Fundraising Page competition was Council staff member Jeremy Levine. All donations on Jeremy's personal page were made in memory of his grandmother, Roberta Casper.

Four Decades for Children 40th Anniversary Gala

In April of 2013, Council hosted "Four Decades for Children", a 40th Anniversary Gala. The gala celebrated 40 years of service to the children and families of Nassau County. The celebration was held at The Carltun in Eisenhower Park, and included a cocktail hour, dinner, honoree reception, a casino game room, silent raffles and musical entertainment.

Five outstanding individuals were recognized at the event. These women have all contributed a great deal over the years to Council's mission.

Gloria Wallick was honored posthumously for her leadership in the field of child care for over 23 years. Each of the other four honorees represent a decade of development and achievement with a specific focus:

Judith Davidson Moyers, CEO of Public Affairs Television, Inc., represented the 1970s, the startup decade to meet the need for child care services.

Janet Walerstein, Executive Director of Child Care Council of Suffolk, represented the 1980s, marking our impact on public policy.

Valerie McCarthy, a past Board President of Child Care Council of Nassau, represented the 1990s, with a focus on development and volunteerism.

Theresa Regnante, President and CEO of United Way of Long Island, represented the 2000s, focusing on community partnerships.

Our event sponsors included Judith and Bill Moyers, Investors Bank, Children's Nest Early Childhood Education Center, Valerie and Patrick McCarthy, and United Way of Long Island.
